Tips

  • The Extras
Besides being open for a rigorous schedule of tours, the staff host art festivals, concerts, theater productions, weddings, receptions and meals for special events.
  • Know Before You Go
n 1977, heiress Elisabeth Congdon and her nurse were bludgeoned and smothered to death in a case of insurance fraud. Fans of the paranormal rank the mansion among Minnesota's haunted houses and there's a book about it in the gift shop, but this topic isn't covered in the tours unless the guides are provoked.

We went for our school feild trip and it was the most awesome thing that I ever saw!!! It is so beautiful!!! But you should read the book about the murders before you go so during the tour you know which rooms and which steps that they were murdered in!!! It was awesome!! I would go again and again and again!!!!!!!! Please visit and find out for yourself!!!

Pros: beautiful, friendly staff, get moneys worth

Cons: walking, no talk about murders

Don't miss it !

This is a great tour for anyone who likes history, interior decor, architecture or just walking around someone else's house. You get a tour of the first 3 floors for $9.50 or a total tour of all 5 floors for $18.00. This was the setting to a 70's Patty Duke movie "You'll Like My Mother" and the sight of a real life murder...but don't ask your tour guide about the murders. They're not allowed to talk about them. Walk around the grounds and see their formal gardens, carrige house, boat house and a gorgeous view of lake superior. This is well worth the money. Younger children may not have the patience, however, and may feel stifled in the "don't touch a single thing" atmosphere.

Pros: interesting, good parking, friendly tour guides

Cons: bit expensive, cold in the winter, much walking
